Family is Good for the Soul

This weekend I went to visit the extended fam in Jersey for some quality time with the crew and to meet my cousin’s presh baby (cousin once removed? who knows). I love spending time with my big, outspoken, obnoxious, and insane family. There’s nothing better.

It was my amazing Grandmom’s 81st birthday. She’s amazing, seven kids, sixteen grandkids, and one great-grandkid.

Misbehaving after Mass. Clearly I am a bad influence.

I mean what is cuter than a smiley little baby?

Most of the girl cousins. Clearly we are a little girl heavy.

Love my mom and sissy.

Retail Diaries Part One.

This summer I have been working as a manager at a jewelry store. Basically this is not a job that I ever would have found, chosen, thought about doing until it fell in my lap. And I love it so much. I love interacting with people and telling them that all fourteen bracelets that they have on look great together at the same time, I love helping people style themselves so that they feel great, but mostly, I love how happy people are when they leave the store with their new purchases. This is something you don’t get as a phone secretary y’all. Those businessmen are not nearly as friendly, let me tell you. However, like any job, there are some crazies and being in Nantucket, the richest county in the nation, let’s just say the crazies are not few and far between. Here are a few shining examples of the bat-shit crazy people that I deal with on a daily basis. They make me laugh each and every day. Never a dull moment!

Scenario One

Crazy lady clearly on a bunch of xanax (currently wearing three different headbands): Which one do you like? I would ask my husband but he fell asleep on the bench out front (he is actually 95 years old no lie and I’m hoping that he is really just sleeping if you catch my drift).

Me: Well it just depends on your taste, I think that they could all work for you. Your decision!

Crazy: You’re right, I’ll get this one. (Immediately distracted by neon pink and basket weave clutch. Picks up said clutch and realizes it jingles when you make any movement [die].) Does this fit any stuff in it?

Me: Yep it’s pretty spacious but you can try it.

Crazy: Proceeds to stuff entire contents of purse including her not yet purchased bracelets into clutch and jams it closed within an inch of its life. AND SOLD

Me: Don’t forget to take off all the {four} headbands on your head on your way out. (thought bubble: must go buy smelling salts for old man husbands who pass out outside).

Scenario Two

Two cute older ladies come into the store and purchase five workout headbands for their one year old grandaughter (these are made for adults by the way).

Seemingly cute old lady: Here’s my card.

Me: I’m so sorry it actually didn’t go through, do you have a different card?

Lady: Yeah whatever here.

REPEAT THREE TIMES

Lady: Storms out of store in an angry rage because her three credit cards were all declined leaving her headbands that she gave me to package and all of the ones from our store. “I’m not dealing with this shit. I refuse to pay in cash.” MMMkkkk

20 MINUTES LATER

Friend returns and pays the thirty dollars in cash thank you have a nice day.

Scenario Three

Two women come off of their yacht to do some shopping for their kids. One is named Paris and lady clearly sweeps out all kids necklaces that are Paris themed. Woman has largest engagement ring that I have ever seen in my life EVER.

Me: Reads back purchase (32 neon bobby pins, 20 hair ties, eight kids necklaces, one pair of earrings, and a bracelet) as woman continues to add and subtract items every time I try to package them up. (Half an hour later receipt machine breaks and I am totaling by hand.) Your total will be somewhere around $400.

Mom’s friend who was buying all this stuff: Are you kidding me that is crazy? What did I even buy?

Me: Repeats purchase order back again.

Disgruntled customer: Oh that makes sense let me add this bracelet too. Proceed to walk out of store without the four other bags they came in with. Five minutes pass and I search for them only to find them perusing the wine store. Facepalm.

Hope you enjoyed The Retail Diaries Part One.

Blogger 411 {about me}

I decided to participate in this link-up so that y’all could get to know me just a little bit better :). Enjoy!

1. How long have you been blogging? And what got you started on blogging? Has your blog changed?

I have been blogging since October 2010 which was my Freshman year of college. I started blogging because I needed (yet another) way to procrastinate studying and doing my homework. I decided that it would be a fun way to document my life in college for my family and friends to read. I think that my blog is changing every day as I get older and I think that as my life goes through changes, the blog will too!

2. Did you go to college? If so where, and what did you study?

I am about to be a Junior (terrifying) at a school in Boston. If I haven’t said where I go to school, I am sure that I have given tons of hints but for now, I don’t really like to say :). I am currently studying Marketing with a minor in Human Development.

3. Where have you traveled?

My family loves to travel so here is a rundown: In the US: FL, GA, AL, TN, SC, NC, PA, NY, VT, NH, MA, NJ, IL, AZ, NM, CA, NV, and HI. Outside of the US: We love going to Atlantis in the Bahamas so I have been there a bunch of times. France, England, Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Canada.

4. If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?

I would pay for my college first haha and then I would go on trips with my family.

5. What are your 3 biggest pet peeves?

Disgusting mouth noises, rude people, when people scratch silverware on plates, teeth, etc. (cringing)

6. What is your favorite movie?

I have a ton but if I had to narrow it down to three I would probably say Legally Blonde, The Sound of Music, and Finding Nemo (diverse, I know)

7. What is your drink of choice; wine, beer, or liquor. Or Water, Soda, Tea?

Diet Coke: my sick addiction that I will never be able to get rid of (sorry organs). I also absolutely love my mommy’s iced tea. It’s kind of famous with my friends and family.

8. What is something you enjoy to do when you have me time?

I really don’t like being alone and never have but if I am, I will usually read a book, go shopping, Blog, or go work out.

9. If you could have a $10,000 shopping spree to one store, which store would it be?

Target, hands down favorite store and it probably wouldn’t take long which is embarrassing.

10. Share with us an embarrassing moment of your past? Or present.

Y’all my life is just one embarrassing moment. My parents live to embarrass me and therefore we all just embarrass each other 24/7. You have to find the fun in life. But one specific horrifyingly embarrassing moment was when my Dad hired fake paparazzi to stalk us in L.A. Looking back, extremely funny but at the moment, wanted to cry especially when there was a huge crowd.

11. What day would you love to relive again?

I would love to relive my graduation party. It was a huge pink and green preppy wonderland and I had so much fun hanging out with my friends and family.

12. If your life was turned into a movie… what actor would play you?

I have no idea. Probably someone insane. My sisters love to call me the “Khloe” of the fam (what’s a good blog post without a Kardashian reference) because I am the funniest/most sarcastic so we’ll go with that.

13. What are the jobs you had in high school/college/the early years?

I’m pretty sure I’m still in my early years but so far I have been a babysitter, a secretary, a nanny, and now I manage a jewelry store.

14. Show us a picture from high school or college.

Football Game with the roomie, nBt!

15. If you could travel anywhere in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?

I would go to Bora Bora. I want a little hut where I can hang out all day and do nothing!

16. Show us the most current picture of you or you, or your family, or anything of meaning to you.

Me and my mommy before I left.

17. Where do you see your life 5 years from now?

Five years from now I hope that I have a stable job and am happy. Can’t ask for much more than that :).

Essie Fall 2012

It’s no secret that I have a serious nail polish problem. For me, if I have a bad day or need a little cheering up, a bottle of nail polish and a mani/pedi always makes me feel a hundred times better. I don’t know what it is but it always works for me! On that note, Essie just released their Fall 2012 line and it is to DIE for. I usually don’t discriminate amongst nail polish brands but Essie is my absolute favorite. It’s not too thick or thin and the bottles are super cute so that’s a plus.

All of the colors for fall are so perfect but I especially love the stylenomics green. It is a deep emerald and would be perfect for fall and winter. Being a St. Patty’s Day baby, I am always looking for the perfect green nail polish and this comes close to my all time favorite jade is the new black.

Second in the lineup for 2012 is recessionista (clever naming). It’s a cute magenta that I think is definitely more of a Summer to Fall but is still cute nonetheless. I’m in love with the shimmery greige called Miss Fancy Pants. Perfect neutral, for sure.  The last three rounding up the collection are skirting the issue (burgundy) which is predictable, don’t sweater it (a really cute mauve), and head mistress (bright red for fall?). Anyways, that’s my completely non-professional take on Essie’s fall collection. What’s your favorite color?

Makeup Routine

I am continuing my effort to be a better blogger this week in general so today’s post is about my every day makeup routine. I have really, really freakishly sensitive skin and because of that, it has taken me a long time to be able to find a routine that works for me without making my face angry. I really hate spending a long time doing my makeup as well so my routine is usually fifteen minutes or less.

Foundation

Disclaimer: I don’t use any spf moisturizer so shoot me. My foundation has SPF and I avoid the sun anyways. For my foundation, I use Bare Minerals matte fairly light. I am also very pale so I don’t need a summer and a winter. I also use all of the brushes provided by the BM starter kit for my foundation and blush.

Blush

I use Nars Orgasm blush and it is the only non hypo-allergenic thing that I can use on my face. If you have sensitive skin then you should be okay using this as well. If I’m feeling particularly adventurous and want to pretend to look bronze, then I use the Bare Minerals warmth powder on my cheeks and t-zone as well.

Eyes

In general, I use Bare Minerals round the clock waterproof eyeliner in black but last time I went shopping they were out. I had to, gasp, change my routine so I switched to Stila smudge-proof waterproof eye liner. I always have an issue though with having my eyeliner wind up in the crease of my eye which is fun but I’m still trying to remedy that situation. Suggestions welcome.

I know this brand is seeming repetitive but again, sensitive skin. Soooo for my mascara I use Bare Minerals Flawless Definition mascara. I have tried the other ones but I like this brush the best because it doesn’t have bristles that tend to make my eyelashes super clumpy. I also curl my eyelashes every day with a severely beat up eyelash curler from Sephora.

For my actual eye color, I use the Urban Decay Naked Palette (obsessed). It is amazing for blending eyes and going from day to night. If you don’t have this and you love a good neutral eye like me, go for it and splurge! It’s worth it.

Face Wash

And last but not least, I swear by Clean and Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser. I have been using it for like six years and it still works like a charm. I love it and I love that it’s under ten dollars.

Hope this helps anyone who is searching for sensitive skin answers!

What I’ve Been Reading.

Because I work at a retail store, I get some down time during the day when it isn’t as busy. During this time, I love to hang out outside on the bench in the shade and do some reading. Also, because I mostly have no life at night because I know no one (fun, I know), I have been getting A LOT of reading done. Here is what I have read and enjoyed slash hated lately. There is a really eclectic mix so hopefully it’s helpful!

Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed- I read the first book a few months ago at school and I actually really disliked it. I thought that it was really strange and the abuse made me super uncomfortable so I held off on reading the next ones. Once I hacked onto nBt’s Nook app, I read the next two and while they were less creepy and violent, still not my favorite. But, I guess it’s something to check off the box.

Easy and Beautiful Disaster- I’m grouping them together because they were basically the same book. They were both around 3.99 on Amazon so I decided to get them both. I really liked them and I definitely recommend them for quick, easy reads but they are a little younger I feel like.

Flat-Out Love- Really cute and again an easy read. I think I read it in a day or two. It is also a little younger, definitely geared towards college age but it had a surprise ending. Good coming-of-age story.

I’ve Got Your Number- I usually like Sophie Kinsella but this was just so dumb. I really disliked it and there was honestly no story. Decent distraction, bad story.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe- A really good and classic read. I loved it.

I’m currently reading Barefoot and The Shack so I’ll update after I finish them.

Funny Gifs and E-Cards

Since I just finished 50 Shades of Grey and since it is 400 degrees in Nantucket when it is supposed to be approx seventy, I am posting some apropos e-cards that I also think are hilarious. Enjoy!

Anddddd this is how I feel when I am trying to calculate change at work every day. Math FAILURE.

Anddd this is what I look like trying to get into my absurdly high chair at my desk every morning before caffeine

A Day Off And…

A post about pretty much nothing…sorry in advance.

Since I have gotten to ACK, I have had a total of three days off and I am not complaining at all because I love working. I always used to be the type of person that could just sit on the couch all day and do nothing but that has changed BIG TIME. Now, I feel like if I’m not moving then I’m going crazy. However to clarify that statement, I’m not talking about doing actual real things that would be beneficial to anyone’s life but anywhoooo, still doing something. So today, for my first day off in a while I took myself out to a super unhealthy breakfast which I enjoyed all of until I realized that nowhere on this island takes debit cards (woops) and then went grocery shopping and made cake pops for the munchkins (and maybe a few for me too). I have been trying to work out all day but every time I go outside it’s two hundred degrees and I turn around and contemplate another cake pop, major fail. I also was going to go shopping but nixed that idea when I already destroyed my bank account yesterday downtown and this decision also led to a nixing (word?) of the so shamelessly overpriced mani/pedi on the island. Although there are like five different nail places they all are so hideously expensive which is so rude. It would require a whole lot of rowing to get back to Boston and a cheap but still somewhat reputable nail salon.

On another note, I keep flagging different jewelry that I want to buy but I am having such a hard time nailing down something that I actually will get since I work at a jewelry store. Basically I just go and play dress-up every day with all kinds of fun jewelry buttttt I feel like when the Summer ends I will be oh so sad when I have no jewelry and lots of clothes. Sadness. I’m thinking that after a few more paychecks, I will go on a Bridier Baubles haul including the mini Boca and the Coco (both flagged). But we shall see because I am most notorious for being a shopping waiverer who cannot commit to anything until actually wearing it four or five times. Anyone else do that or am I just insane?

Aforementioned cake pops. Side note: the only store on the island is Stop & Shop and they clearly know nothing about cake pops hence the bamboo kebab stick instead of the traditional lollipop stick (sigh).

What I’m Loving: Nantucket Edition

There are so many things that I love about Nantucket even though I’ve only been here for a few weeks so far. Soooo, I decided to do a post in picture form about the things that I am loving so far. Enjoy!

I love having fresh peonies in the store every day.

I love Nantucket sunsets from the front porch.

I love hydrangeas in full summer bloom.

I love the Nantucket beaches (even though the one next door to this one is a nude beach, who knew?)

C. Wonder. No words for the love of this store.
